The success of a bonded application hinges on a strong bond between the substrate and bonding coat. Proper preparation, ensuring the surface is sound, clean, and free from contaminants like oil, grease, dust, or paint, is crucial for a successful installation. The quality of any topping or leveling screed depends directly on the bond strength with the surface.
The moisture content of the slab could migrate to the screed / topping and give rise to a longer dry time. Refer to manufacturers details if specialist toppings / screeds are to be applied. Where the moisture content exceeds recommendations then a surface damp proof membrane can be applied. Care must taken if forced drying of concrete slab as carbonation can take place.
Carbonation occurs when fossil fuel heaters cause Carbon Dioxide to react with calcium hydroxide in fresh concrete, forming a weak calcium carbonate layer. This layer, along with any curing compounds on concrete, must be removed through scabbling, planing, or shot blasting for successful screed/topping application.
New concrete must age over six weeks to avoid shrinkage cracks that can affect the screed or topping. Any cracks should be promptly repaired. Ensure primers are applied to a dry surface, with slab moisture content carefully considered.
Old concrete requires equal care, including moisture testing to address any dampness. CSC Screeding Ltd provides comprehensive services for preparing substrates for screeding systems and toppings, ensuring they meet moisture, strength, suitability, and cleanliness standards.
